Customer Files Instructions (Please Read)

You can avoid extra charges and delays by preparing your files correctly for high resolution digital output. If we have to open your files and make changes or corrections to print the file, you will be billed hourly for that service.

Applications

Windows:
Indesign CS, Adobe PageMaker 7, CorelDraw 12, Adobe PhotoShop CS,
Adobe Illustrator CS, QuarkXPress 4.1, Microsoft Publisher 2007.

Macintosh:
Indesign CS, Adobe PhotoShop CS, Adobe Illustrator CS, QuarkXPress 6.

(We have programs like: MS Word and Excel, but they are not recommended for commercial printing process)

Placed Graphics
Graphic Images should be saved as .AI or .EPS. or .TIF

Please note: images pulled from the internet like: JPG and GIF are intended for internet use only and are LOW RESOLUTION and will print very poor quality. If you have a JPG image, be sure that it is a HIGH RESOLUTION JPG, not Low Resolution.

When placing scanned images such as photographs into a page layout document please: If the image is for 4-color printing, convert RGB files to CMYK mode before placing the image! Preferred dpi for all image files is 300 dpi. 72 dpi files are unacceptable for 175 line screen printing. Do not crop a placed photo so that only a portion of a large image is being used. Our system still has to process the entire image, then throw away what is cropped out. Crop first in PhotoShop then place the image in your document. Do not rotate a large placed image in the layout file. Rotate first in PhotoShop then place your image in the document. Mask as needed.

Color Separations
Please print color separations to your printer so that you can check to see that the colors will separate properly before sending to us. This will save you time and money. If you can not get the application to print color separations, then the application may not have the ability to separate colors and you will need to create the file in a software program that will.

Preparing Your Files
Make your files clean and simple. The less complex the file, the quicker the job can be output. This means a faster turnaround time for you.

Trapping should be set on all files to avoid white gaps in printing where colors meet. In Adobe Illustrator trap artwork manually. Standard trapping is .65pts. In Adobe PageMaker, select Trapping in the Preferences menu and click the box by “Enable trapping for publication” before saving your file. Use default settings elsewhere.

Delete any linked files that are no longer needed in your file. Avoid covering graphics, images or type with white boxes. Those items are still there and slow down the processing of your files. Do not rename a linked file after saving the main file.

Placing a graphic into a file, then importing this file into another, is called layering. Layering files more than 2 deep is not recommended. Using several programs when layering compounds the problem.

Allow 1/8” bleed on all bleeding sides. If you place an image that bleeds beyond the trim, make sure your original image file is large enough to accommodate the bleed before placing it.

We recommend making blends with CMYK colors unless your job is being printed in spot colors.

To make sure your job is trimmed properly, we suggest using the trim marks filter in Adobe Illustrator or creating crop marks in other programs where the trim size is smaller than the page size.

Fonts
On the Macintosh, do not make a font bold or italic by selecting bold or italic from the application menu, select the specific bold or italic font you want to use instead. True Type fonts on IBM computers do not require this, they work fine by simply selecting bold or italic, etc.

Apple Printing CO has thousands of fonts, but new ones are designed practically every day. To ensure your files will be output correctly, please include fonts used in any linked .eps files. For IBM files, include the True Type Fonts. For Machintoch files, Suite Case the fonts, and include both the screen and print driver version of each font. All copies of fonts will be returned to you after printing.
